They just do spectrum (FFT) monitoring so you can’t really decode the transmission unless you use very slow AM or PSK or something 🙂

Tips and thoughts on using RTLSDR as an E&H field scanner?

For senior design, one of my professors thought it would be cool to build an E&H field probe scanner. He thought it would be even more cool to use SDR over a spectrum analyzer. The design aspect is focusing on the CNC controls, software, and power supply. But if we have extra time I'm going to attempt to make an SDR myself.

I have the RF explorer H-loop near field antenna, it came with a kit I got. However, using it with the RTLSDR I've noticed that it picks up a lot of noise. Sometimes the signals it picks up are far more intense than the signals I'm trying to measure.

I'm wondering if there's a good way to prevent this. For example, using direct sampling I or Q, I can pick up an Arduino's 16MHz clock, but the signal is very small relative to other emissions outside of the DUT.

Is there anything I should look into in terms of noise reduction when using a loop probe? Are there any software tricks I could investigate?

Help identifying wandering VLF signal

I'm new to software defined radio work (though background in some related signals with a degree in EE, so not entirely dumb), and I am working on integrating a VLF receiver to pick up the WWVB broadcast to use with microcontrollers.

Wanted to take a peak at the raw signals local to me and, luckily, my audio card support 192kHz sampling. Tooling around, I saw this signal wandering around 15-21kHz. Mostly out of curiosity, I wanted to ask the community if they have experienced it and if there were any ideas as to what it was.

I find it not showing the correct frequency. When I transmit on 446.1, SDR# shows it as 446.1. SDRANGLE howerver, it its spectrum, shows it at 446.085. Can’t figure out how to correct htis.
