KerberosSDR • Re: Feasibility of a Passive Weather Radar

oops, this board only works to 1.7 ghz, so WSR-88D's are out of the question without a mixer...

sorry, forgot the board freq limit.

KerberosSDR • Re: Feasibility of a Passive Weather Radar

It might be possible, to a point. Here's what I know about the WSR-88D radars. (ham that did P/T work at the local NWS.)

* Freq: 2880 mhz
* 1/2 million watts
* 1/2 degree beam with H & V.
* high PRF (pulse doppler)
* reasonably low turning rate, like 1 min per rev. (guess)
* raster scan, starts at the top, works it's way down, again a low rate. (guess)

It's like looking at the sky thru a soda straw. It's also why it take 5-6 min to build a single pic.
(meaning every pic you see is 5-6 min old...) But, you can "slice & dice" a storm, you should
see the "tools" the NWS uses, it does exactly just that.

When i get my board (July?), might give it a shot, but not much hope.

Has anyone done similar
Will be using an android phone and be nice to get weather faxes airband and ham hf stuff th
Thanks andy

Winding wire

So just for fun I wound 20m of washing line (i use the same length and type for my end fed) around a bit of pvc pipe.

What would I expect if i whacked some coax on it and tuned in to hf with my V3?.

GEO sat at 9° elevation. Any chance?

I would really love to try receiving the ELEKTRO-L 2 geosynchronous satellite, but from my point of view it is at 9 degrees elevation.

I have a 1m dish antenna that can pick up Es'hail-2 very well, although Es'hail-2 for me is at 31°

Do you think it is possible to receive anything from the satellite? It is transmitting at 1691MHz and 1693MHz, which would also push the limit of my RTL-SDR V3 dongle, but I hope that the relatively low frequency (compared to 9-12GHz TV sats) would have a better chance of making it through all the atmosphere.
