Hello All.

I have had a QHA built for me. I know absolutely nothing about antennas required for weather satellites.

As far as I have read, the QHA is one of the better if not the best. If you do chase the NOAA and Meteor could you please tell me of any quirks etc the QHA has eg. does it require line of sight, more so than any other antenna, does it perform better with an LNA?

RTL-SDR Discussion • LNA advice wanted

Hello All,
I have a QHA made by my very kind neighbour for me as I am severely disabled after an ugly incident and now have no use from my body, however that's another story.

Over the past week or more we have been experimenting with it. There's no doubt for the quality of picture, the QHA up about 8ft, outperforms this commercial product which is 36ft up. On too many occasions it has lines across the screen whereas the QHA is completely clean. The difference though is that the commercial product gives a lot longer capture and can be doctored up, lines, marks and all, sometimes on a perfect day I do get a very good NOAA picture. Whereas the QHA doesn't capture a picture long enough to colour it.

Therefore, I was thinking of adding an LNA for my QHA and hopefully get the Meteor too. I would exchange the QHA and put it up to 36ft in place of the other.

What sort of LNA would you suggest (remembering the Meteor) and do you know who sells your suggestion?

Winter and Grid antennas

It is currently snowing out and this will be my first winter with a grid dish set up for GOES reception. Any tips on keeping snow from building up on it? Up here we get from 160" to 200" a year so I think it will probably be an issue. Or will it?

I’m not licensed, so I have no idea when it comes to ham gear. I’d read the manual and look for the maximum signal level out of the IF out port and check that it is under the “+10 dBm Maximum RF input” listed in the technical specifications for an Airspy HF+ ( https://airspy.com/airspy-hf-plus/ ) . And if that is not listed in the manual then I’d contact the company the who made the ham radio and see what they advise. Maybe contact them for a schematic and calculate what the maximum signal level could be. And if they don’t know or won’t help then I’d experiment with with a rotary attenuator between the HAM gear and the SDR. Starting with maximum attenuation and dialing it lower and lower. But it could well be that no attenuation is needed is needed. Maybe talk to other hams what they have done.
