SDR (RTL2838UHIDIR) not picking up signal that scanner is.

I'm fairly new to SDR and I've been trying to replace my ancient scanner (from 1992) with an RTLSDR dongle. When I tune into the correct frequency using SDR# I don't hear anything but static (nor do I see anything on the waterfall). However, if I plug the scanner back into the same antenna setup I hear everything. Any idea what could be causing this?

я и ночью не смог получить, но у меня полуромб с трансом 800/75, который создает большое затухание выше 20 мгц. А вот си…

No cellular nor internet

My brother is inviting me. He said there is no cellular nor internet. Anyway we can tap in back to the world(HAHAHA)? I'm just curious and see how it will work. I haven't seen outernet. Not sure if there is another way. Also, what portable diy antenna should I make if it posslble? What apps/softwares do I need?

Antenna working fine, METEOR M2 attempt failed

Went out with my antenna to try a METEOR M2 pass (53 degrees) and received...nothing. No signal on 137.9 or 137.1 or anywhere else in that area. Tried every different gain setting, still nothing. Could it be from interference since I was more or less in the heart of the city? I tested the antenna on a couple of radio stations and it's working fine. I did hear a radio station repeated on a couple of frequencies outside its designated (107.3, heard it around 108 and 128, although I don't remember the exact frequencies). If it is interference, what can I do to fix it?

Tried this with two cheap tv taps from one local store. -8dB and -20dB taps. Tried to test home different home made antennas (ground pane quarter-wave monopole (433, 1090), QFH for 137 MHz, collinear 1090). Antenna connected to input via short coax, noise source to output and v2 dongle to tap.
The result is quite similar for both tv taps. But if I change the length of coax between input and antenna resonant frequency changes (for example 450 MHz for short coax and 433 for a bit longer). Tried different coax length – the resulting plot are very, very different.
What am I doing wrong (I’m not good in all this radio stuff, just trying to reproduce some tutorials from this blog)?

850mHz DIY directional antennas for monitoring LSM systems

I'm working on dialing in a local LSM system on the 850mHz band, and my proximity to simulcast sites dictates a directional antenna.

I started tonight by building a bailing wire and chewing gum (ok.. lexan, epoxy and wire, only slightly better) 5-element yagi which offers some directivity and reduced bit error rates, but I'm curious if any of you have experimented with directional antennas for 700/800mHz LSM systems -- and what you may have learned. I'd prefer to DIY build, since I'm both cheap and enjoy antenna work, but effective inexpensive commercial suggestions welcome.
